Dido and Aeneas is an Opera by Henry Purcell. Set to words by Nahum Tate, the opera follows Dido's – the Queen of Carthage's – fate. Abandoned by her lover Aeneas, she dies."When I am laid in earth" is her testament and closes the third and final act of the opera. The original stage direction reads: "She stabs herself on the funeral pile which is lighted."[2] Concepted as a chaconne, it is set over a repeating, downward bass line. [3]
