La Molinara (engl: The Beautiful Miller), also called L'amor contrastato (The Thwarted Love) is an opera by Giovanni Paisiello, after a libretto by Giuseppe Palomba.[2]. There seem to be different versions: The one from Parma[1], Teatro di Corte, 1791, does not have the "Nel cor più non mi sento" at all. (That such a popular piece would be cut is unlikely, so this would validate future research.) The one from Naples, Teatro di Fiorentini 1789[3], does, as well as the 1810 libretto from La Scala[4].

International premiere dates have to be taken with a grain of salt: "L'Amor Contrasto, in 1795, was by the theatre management hailed as new, when it still was the La Molinarella, later La Molinara, having its King's [Theatre] premiere in 1791."[5]

Easily the most famous piece from the opera is "Nel cor più non mi sento".

Synopsis

The opera unites many well-loved tropes. The plot is lively and comical, so it comes as no surprise that the opera stayed internationally popular long after its inception.

The comedy revolves around the character of the beautiful and mischievous Rachelina, owner of a mill, flattered by the attention of two men (the nobleman Calloandro and the notary Pistofolo) and undecided as to which of the two to choose as suitor. The game is fun but dangerous because it can awaken the jealousy of Baroness Eugenia, feudal lord of the place and also promised to Calloandro.[6]

The scene is on the estate of the Baroness, near Naples.[7]
