John Dowland, (1563 – buried 20 February 1626) was an English or possibly Irish composer, lutenist and singer.[1]. He frequently visited the continent, which led him to long times of separation from his family. It was also in Europe that he converted to Catholicism. From 1598 on, Dowland composed for Christian IV of Denmark. He was dismissed in 1606, and in 1612 began his service for James I of England. In addition to his very well-paying musical career, we have Dowland's own words that he also performed a number of espionage assignments for Sir Robert Cecil in France and Denmark.[1]
