"Dormi, o fulmine di guerra" is an aria from Alessandro Scarlatti's oratorio La Giuditta (1697, also referred to as the Cambridge Giuditta). Written to a libretto by Antonio Ottoboni, it was first performed in Rome or Naples in 1697[2]
Context
Judith's maidservant (nutrice) sings a lullaby for Holofernes (Oloferne). She paints a vivid pretext for it by framing it as what Delilah sings to Samson, lulling him into sleep before she cuts off his hair – all a foreshadowing for the act to follow, where Judith and her maidservant take their fate into their own capable hands.
Antonio Ottoboni – besides being a poet and librettist of the Cambridge Giuditta – was the prince general of the papal army.
