Born | Nicola Antonio Giacinto Porpora August 17, 1686 |
Died | March 3, 1768 Naples | (aged 81)
Nicola Porpora was the third of ten children of the bookseller Carlo and Caterina di Costanzo. In 1696, began his education at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo. It is likely that he soon became a tutor for the younger students because his fee was reduced.[1] 1708 saw the performance of his first composition for the stage at the Palazzo reale, L'Agrippina.
Porpora seems to have been equally gifted as a composer as he was as a teacher. Among his famous students are Carlo Broschi, later known as Farinelli as well as Gaetano Majorano, who would go by the stage name of Caffarelli. Farinelli made his debut in 1719, as prima donna in Porpora's Angelica, with Caffarelli as his rival. In Rome, two commissions followed in 1722 and 1723, both with Farinelli in the role of prima donna.[1] As Farinelli's career and voice evolved, he took on the parts of the hero.
Porpora had a very steady career that eventually led him to London, where he was the competition to Händel's musical enterprises, again with Farinelli on his team.[2]
The connection between Porpora and his pupil never seems to have waned. They engaged in extensive correspondence, lasting all their lives.
