Porpora seems to have been equally gifted as a composer as he was as a teacher. Among his famous students are Carlo Broschi, later known as [[Farinelli]] as well as Gaetano Majorano, who would go by the stage name of Caffarelli.
 
Farinelli made his debut in 1719, as {{lang|it|prima donna}} in Porpora's ''Angelica'', with Caffarelli as his rival. In Rome, two commissions followed in 1722 and 1723, both with Farinelli in the role of {{lang|it|prima donna}}.<ref name="Treccani"/> As Farinelli's career and voice evolved, he took on the parts of the hero.
