"If music be the food of love" (Original: "If musick be the food of love") is a song by Henry Purcell and was first published in the Gentleman’s Journal, Juni 1692. There is a persistent belief that the song is a setting of a Shakespeare text. However, only the first line is: "If music be the food of love, play on".[2] The lyrics to Purcell's song were written by Henry Heveningham. [1]
