'''Giovanni Faustini''' (* 19 May 1615<ref name="Wiki"/> or 1619<ref name="Treccani"/> in Venice; † 19 December 1651 ibid.) was an Italian opera librettist and opera impresario.
==Biography==
Giovanni Faustini initially started out as a lawyer, but since he was young "for his own pleasure he applied his talent to musical-dramatic compositions, in which he succeeded admirably in inventing in particular" (Sandberger, p. 57).<ref name="Treccani"/>
He became impresario in Venice at the Teatro San Cassiano (the first public opera house opened in 1637), Teatro San Moisè (founded in 1639) and the Teatro San Apollinare (which he rented with two business partners for his opera productions from 1650). Of his 14 libretti, most were set to music by Cavalli - eleven were written just for him.
In 1651, he took charge of the administration of the S. Apollinare theatre, a post that passed into the hands of his brother Marco at the end of that year, after Giovanni Faustini's death.
Faustini's libretti were very popular with composers audiences, both in Venice and in other major Italian cities, and "in the course of just nine years, all his works were performed in the theatres of this city with the greatest applause"<ref name="Treccani"/>
With [[Francesco Cavalli]], he formed the most successful opera-composer/librettist duo in the Venice of the 1640s, where the genre of opera as we know it today developed after Monteverdi's death. Opera was booming in Venice at the time, as evidenced by the founding of numerous competing opera houses. Shortly after the premiere of La Calisto (for which he wrote the libretto, Cavalli the music) at the end of 1651, he died. Shortly before, he had opened the Teatro Sant' Apollinare opera house. The management was continued by his brother Marco, who became a successful impresario in the decade that followed. (''Abridged and translated from Wikipedia''<ref name="Wiki"/>
