Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez (Montevideo, March 18, 1897 - Ib., April 25, 1948) was a musician, pianist, journalist and composer of Uruguayan tangos and Creole songs. In 1916, he created his masterstroke, La Cumparsita. The piece that has been named "The tango of tangoes" has been plagiarized many times. The text version created in 1924 by Pascual Contursi und Enrique Pedro Maron was made famous by Carlos Gardel: "Si supieras que aún dentro de mi alma ...".
