Francesca Caccini, September 18, 1587, Florence – after 1641, ibid.), born into a family of musicians, was a musical phenomenon of her time. According to her father, Giulio Caccini, she had already published three volumes of songs comprising 300 individual pieces for voice by 1706.[1] Maria de Medici sent the familiy ensemble of five people to the court of Henry IV in Paris. They halt to give concerts in Modena, Milan, Turino and Lyon. Francesca Caccini plays the cembalo, the lute as well as the guitar. Oftentimes, she accompanies herself.[2]

She is offered a permanent contract in Paris but has to follow Grand Duke Ferdinando I. de' Medici's call to return to Florence with her family.[3] 1607 sees the premiere of her first piece for the stage, La Stiava. Seven more staged compositions – most written for the Carnival in Florence – are to follow until 1625.

Few compositions survive until today, among them Il primo libro delle musiche a una e due voce, Florence, Zanobi Pignoni (1618) and the ballet-opera La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina, Florence Pietro Cecconcelli (1625). The latter is seen as the first opera ever written and performed by a woman coposer.[2]
