His father, a nephew of Pope Innocent X (Giovanni Battista Pamphilj), was the former Cardinal Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphilj, who in 1647 gave up his cardinalate for marriage to Olimpia Aldobrandini, Princess of Rossano and widow of the prematurely deceased Paolo Borghese (1622-1642), and had to leave Rome at the insistence of his mother Olimpia Maidalchini.
