Occupation(s)Composer, gambist

Marin Marais (* May 31, 1656 in Paris; † August 15 , 1728 in Paris) was a French gambist and composer.[1]

Marais is still known for his exquisite melodies and the spark of his imagination, the latter displayed e. g. in his most widely known piece, Les Folies d'Espagne.

On the king's recommendation, Marais was appointed to succeed André Campras as director of the orchestra of the Académie royale de musique in 1705. This enabled him to perform his masterpiece, the opera Alcione, on February 18, 1706.

Marais had 19 children, some of whom became musicians. Among the best known are Vincent (c. 1677-1737), who took over his father's position in 1725, and Roland Marais (c. 1685 to c. 1750), of whom two volumes of Pièces de viole have survived.[1]
