Pierre Guédron (also Pierre Guesdron; * around 1570 in Châteaudun; † after 1620 in Paris) was a French singer and composer. He was one of the innovators of French music in the early 17th century and one of the first creators of a dramatically orientated ballet.[1]
Life
Guédron came from a family based in Dunois. He is documented as a choirboy in the chapel of Cardinal and Archbishop of Reims Louis II of Lorraine-Guise in 1585. He performed as an alto at a puy in Évreux. After his master was executed in 1588, Guédron entered royal service. He was initially a singer in Henry III's chapel. In the course of Henry IV's cultural reorganisation, which also affected courtly music, he rose to become director of the ensemble. It was probably during this time that he married Gillette Dugué. In 1601, he succeeded Claude Le Jeune as royal chamber composer and was finally appointed valet de chambre and musical tutor in 1603. In the latter function, he looked after the children of Maria de' Medici. He passed both offices on to his son-in-law Antoine de Boësset in 1613.
Guédron ended his life with a considerable fortune, which he had acquired in royal service, on his estate in the Dunois. Pierre Guédron was held in high esteem by his contemporaries. Madeleine de Scudéry set a literary monument to his reputation as a singing teacher in her precious novel Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus (1649-53) as Crysile. The theorist Marin Mersenne praised Guédron as a composer in his Harmonie universelle (1636).[1]
